The California Drought Asks the Question: Is Water Worth More than Gold?

Most informed Americans are well aware of the “Exceptional” 4th Year of the California Drought. With the combination of News & Media, Social Media Channels such as Twitter, Facebook & YouTube, and the ever growing prices of California’s decimated “Bread Basket” products… I believe there is NO WAY the average American is not being affected by this historical drought in some way.

But here’s an eye opening truth – “An extreme drought happens once every 20 to 50 years and wreaks havoc on crops. An exceptional drought, meanwhile, comes every 50 to 100 years, causing true water emergencies by draining reservoirs, streams and wells.”

What this drought is doing, is truly beginning to “speak” to the hearts & minds of Californians & Americans alike… and its begun this conversation with a bold question – “Is Water Worth More than Gold?!”

Be Careful!… The way we collectively answer this question posed by the California Drought, will define & decide the future of not only California but the Entire Industrialized World.

– A new study reports that one-third of the Earth’s largest groundwater basins are being rapidly depleted.

“Twenty-one of the world’s 37 largest aquifers — in locations from India and China to the United States and France — have passed their sustainability tipping points, meaning more water is being removed than replaced from these vital underground reservoirs… “The water table is dropping all over the world,” said Jay Famiglietti, senior water scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. “There’s not an infinite supply of water.”

It looks like the drought is not just speaking to Californians, but is asking this epic question to the whole world – “Is Water Worth More than Gold?!”

I’m sure most of us would agree, Americans have been blessed with great abundance over the past 50-60 years… but this abundance has led to a consumer culture that cares NOT about the natural resources required to provide us with the “standard of living” we’ve become so accustomed to. We as a nation create more waste and waste related by-products than any other civilization that has ever graced the face of this planet…

Why You Ask?? Because up until now, we’ve been answering this profound question – “Is Water Worth More than Gold?!” with a resounding “NO“. I know this sounds cruel, but our actions speak louder than my words.

Half of all American Residential water usage, both Indoor & Outdoor, is going down the proverbial drain EVERY DAY. Let’s get our heads wrapped around this fact – according to the EPA, the average American family home consumes 320 gallons of water per day… that’s 160 gallons of waste water being produced every day for every home in America! How many homes are there in America?… In 2014, there were about 123.2 million households. That’s 19.7 BILLION gallons of water being wasted every day in the United States… and we’re only talking about the waste water our homes produce! This outrageous stat doesn’t include commercial & industrial properties, as well as common or public spaces such as parks, golf courses and road side agriculture.

The way a civilization treats something… be that a resource, commodity, product or person… tells you exactly how that civilization (as a whole) views the value of that thing… and we’ve been telling “the world” that water has little or no value based on how we’ve chosen to waste it.

The California Drought is beginning to show us the errors of our ways, by the removal of a resource we have treated as “unlimited” for far too long… It seems as if only in the face of the lose of a precious resource, do we come to understand how precious it truly is.

So, the California Drought would like to ask you this question again… “Is Water Worth More than Gold?!“…

I hope by this point you’ve come to realize that our answer, whether it is Yes or No, will ring loud and clear for future generations and will affect them in ways we can hardly imagine.

Anthony Criss (Co-Inventor of the WRESY Water Recycling System) “heard” this question in 2009 and choose to say “YES”… Water IS Worth More Than Gold and he was going to do his best to save this precious & exhaustible resource for his children’s children!

Anthony is a 3rd Generation Landscape Contractor, so with his professional experiences in mind, he looked into his own relationship with outdoor water usage, to see how it was being used & wasted around every home… and what he saw, was that nearly every residential property was funneling 60+ Gallons of water per day to the curb!

Where did this water come from? Poor Irrigation Practices is of course the overarching answer, but the direct answer was Irrigation Drainage & Rain Water Run-off. Most American homes funnel the rain water from their roofs & their irrigation run-off out to the street… this equates to 60+ Gallons of waste water going down the drain every day for every home in the United States. WHY!? There has to be a better way to capture, reuse & re-purpose this water around our homes.

Residential Irrigation & Rain RunoffHence the creation of the WRESY™ Water Recycling System! A deceptively simple, yet ridiculously ingenious, way to give residential and commercial property owners the ability to recapture water from irrigation and rain runoff that can be recycled right back through their existing sprinkler systems.

Imagine… outdoor residential waste water becomes a thing of the past! No more sludge filled street curbs & no more fresh water wasted by being channeled to our storm drains & beaches!

Just Think… if only HALF of the homes in the United States installed a WRESY Water Recycling System (60 Million Homes x 60 Gallons of Run-off per day = 3.6 Billion gallons), we Americans would be saving & recycling nearly 4 BILLION gallons of water EVERY DAY!

Now this begs the final question… “Why have we NOT done this?!?!“… After reading this blog, you should already know the answer… Because we as culture have believed that water is NOT worth more than gold, hence we’re unwilling to spend any money in changing the infrastructure and the way we utilize water in and around our homes.

If you’re the kind of person that finds this unacceptable, or at a minimum unreasonable, welcome to the beginning of creating a better & wetter future for our children and grandchildren! We as parts of the American Community can begin to respond to the California Drought’s looming question – “Is Water Worth More than Gold?!” – by saying “YES” and making the appropriate changes in our own homes and the lives of those we care about.
